Workflow is very simple. First thing I did was to produce a prototype
graphic based on naked-guy[1], basically just an outline used for
reference.
Then when starting a new character I paste that reference into the
background. The canvas is 128x128, so I have some space around the
characters. Drawing was all done in the final in-game resolution, so
no scaling.
Next I opened up the already existing character portrait and used it
for color picking and drew in all the main colors into the reference.
And finally I just detailed the things, added shadows, highlights, etc.
